Illegal immigration contributing to the spread of infectious disease                                          by Joseph A. Lypowy 7/22/06

Lately there has been a lot of debate regarding the enforcement of our borders and illegal immigration. One of the issues that I believe has not been fully addressed and is of significant importance is the control of infectious deceases. One of the reasons there is controlled immigration is to prevent the spread of infectious deceases and make sure travelers get the right immunizations to prevent the spread of deceases which helps to protect our citizens as well as the citizens of other countries. When migrants cross boarders illegally that control is lost.
According to a study headed by John C. Gannon, chairman of the US National Intelligence Council, “ New and reemerging infectious diseases will pose a rising global health threat and will complicate US and global security over the next 20 years. These diseases will endanger US citizens at home and abroad, threaten US armed forces deployed overseas, and exacerbate social and political instability in key countries and regions in which the United States has significant interests”. According to the same study it states, “Annual infectious disease-related death rates in the United States have nearly doubled to some 170,000 annually after reaching an historic low in 1980. Many infectious diseases--most recently, the West Nile virus--originate outside US borders and are introduced by international travelers, immigrants, returning US military personnel”.
Twenty well-known diseases--including tuberculosis (TB), malaria, and cholera--have reemerged or spread geographically since 1973, often in more virulent and drug-resistant forms. At least 30 previously unknown disease agents have been identified since 1973, including HIV, Ebola, hepatitis C, and Nipah virus, for which no cures are available.
Even though it is obvious that national intelligence agencies are aware of the health risks that illegal immigration poses in addition to the security risks, many of our leaders choose to ignore them. In addition to neglecting the security and economic impact on our middle class workforce, at the same time they prefer to play games with the health of our citizens.
