Iraq War- Vietnam War Similarities by Joseph A. Lypowy 12/14/06

We have heard the adage “History repeats itself”, and many have agued whether the Iraq War can be compared to the Vietnam War. I have made some historical observations on the comparison of the two conflicts. Both wars were escalated based on false pretenses. The Vietnam War escalated with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which was based on some false information concerning a small naval skirmish. Similarly, the Iraq War was instigated with claims of the existence of weapons of mass destruction. Both wars began to loose public support 4-5 years after their inception and in both cases, the presiding presidents at the time lost overwhelming public support leading the way for partisan upheavals in Washington.
In 1968 Democrat President Lyndon Johnson and his CFR internationalist advisors lost power which paved the way for Richard Nixon, the Neocon CFR internationalist president who promised to bring an end to the conflict. Instead, the war was escalated and the war continued for another seven years until 1975. At the present time, you can say that the Iraq War is at a similar apex to that which existed in 1968. Today our leaders have to choose whether to get out quick or to “Stay the course”. Today CFR internationalists John McCain ( R) and Joe Lieberman (D) say they want to stay the course, and in the case of McCain, he even wants to increase the amount of troops in Iraq. We must ask ourselves, will there be another seven year withdrawal, similar to the Nixon Administration in the 1970’s ?
One similar fact about the two wars that the public is usually not aware of is, that both wars were United Nations enforcements. On July 13 1965, President Johnson stated, "I think it is well for us to remember that three Presidents have made the pledge for this nation; that the Senate has ratified the SEATO treaty”; "We expect to keep that commitment; our national honor is at stake." SEATO (South Eat Asia Treaty Org.) is a satellite of the United Nations. George W. Bush addressed the UN General Assembly on September 12, 2002 to outline the complaints of the United States against the Iraqi government and declared the invasion of Iraq as an enforcement of UN Security Council Resolution 1441.
