NJ Senator Lautenberg Concerning Amnesty for illegal Aliens

November 4, 2004

Mr. Joseph A. Dear Joseph A.:

Thank you for contacting me about United States immigration policy and your opposition to granting amnesty to illegal immigrants. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue. I certainly understand the view that amnesty should not be granted and that undocumented or illegal aliens should not be eligible for assistance programs offered by the Federal Government. Our assistance programs are already under great strain to meet the needs of Americans. Also, there are concerns that our national security could be threatened if illegal immigration is encouraged. At the present time, there is no legislation pending in the Senate that would grant amnesty to illegal immigrants. In January 2004, President Bush announced his interest in creating a new temporary worker program. But this administration's principles are a piecemeal plot, not a comprehensive plan. I am disappointed that Congress was not consulted in the development of the administration's new immigration policy. Rest assured that Congress continues to work hard to develop immigration policies that are both humane and secure. Please be assured that I will keep your views in mind should the Senate consider amnesty or related legislation. Thank you again for contacting me.
